Our Story

The Gender Based Violence Action Program was founded by Miriam Otengo, a Ugandan diplomat who experienced gender-based violence while serving in the United States

Rather than letting her experience define her, Miriam chose to transform her pain into purpose. She recognized that countless women in her home country of Uganda faced similar or worse situations, often without the resources or support systems to escape violence and rebuild their lives.

What began as a personal mission to give back to her community has grown into a comprehensive support program that touches the lives of survivors across Kampala and Northern Uganda.
